very cool read. a lot of the information was new to me, but i gather that a lot of it has been floating around in various places before this book was published. that said, the author does a great job of putting it all in one place and makes it very readable. i think one of my favorite parts was the authors balanced approach to the two camps regarding native american cultures and their interactions w/ the environment. he does a good job of pointing out that the myth of the "noble savage" who does nothing to disturb the environment is a myth, as is the idea that b/c the native americans actively managed their environment we have no responsibility to limit our own activities. overall a very good read. this book is also makes for very interesting comparisons w/ jared diamond's "guns, germs and steel".
