I won't say much because I feel like I'm going to ruin a truly brilliant reading experience, but I will say that everybody and anybody need to read this book. Beautifully written, this world Mrs. Derting has created is one I oddly hope to visit again. I absolutely loved Charlie, her personality and strength a fresh change to the YA community, as least from the books I've read this past year. And the relationship between her and Max was perfect; not so steamy but sweet enough that you kept rooting for them no matter what. Plus, little Angelina was wordlessly perfect, too, and I'm excited to see if Kimberly Derting has any plans for her in the future. All in all, one of my favorite books of 2011, hands down, and I want more now! If you haven't read The Pledge, stop reading these reviews and pick it up today, right away!!
It took me so long to finish this book and not because I didn't like it, but because it was so hard for me to read. I wanted so badly to cry with Caitlin and so badly to punch Rogerson (How ironic...) But instead I was forcing myself to keep reading, hoping for a happy ending. The writing was simply real and raw. The characters were troubled and as real as anyone can get. When Caitlin's perfect sister,Cass, goes missing, she uses that as an opportunity to find herself and step out of her sister's shadow. She misses Cass but despite it she find new activities and new friends and new relationships that her sister never had. In all the self discovery she starts dating Rogerson, who in my opinion creeped me out from the beginning. Rogerson is different, but dreadlocks and brilliant green eyes don't hide his family issues and his wicked personal demons. Caitlin falls into an all familiar angst ridden and difficult position when Rogerson goes too far and exhibits his demons, bringing them to light acting out towards Caitlin. Caitlin, of course, decides to believe the better in him, hoping and holding onto the good moments. In the end, things get worse and Caitlin is forced out of the mess and forced to confront herself. By this, she learns more about who she is and find her true self, apart from Rogerson or her sister Cass. The ending left me teary eyed when a truly beautiful reunion emerges at just the right time, making it that much more special. I recommend this book to anyone, but be warned it is difficult and hard, sometimes even depressing. I had to put this book down multiple time because it hit so close to home, yet I was intrigued by the hope of a better tomorrow and better end to Caitlin's story. Which I got.
One of THE saddest books I've ever read! I've lost track of how many times I teared up. I have a hard time reading books with bullying in them or just general "unfairness" so I'm probably judging this book harshly! I loved the characters and they were so well written that would explain the emotions but I'm completely bummed out...I need a happy book now...
