Considered the first of the classic Woolfian styled novels, Jacob's Room has (like all of her books), an artist, a somewhat absent or aloof mother, a boy struggling through life, and the backdrop of World War I with a depressing ending. Nothing exciting to me. Blah, blah, blah, Woolf, blah, blah.

I read this on the plane leaving for China. My mother bought it for me the day before I left. And while it was definitely not my favourite Sedaris piece, I'll always have nostalgic memories of it.

What is the What is an autobiographical novel written by David Eggers. It details the life of Achak Deng, one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan during and after the genocide that was part of the 1983-2005 war. Arab militiamen would bombard villages and kill as many villagers as they could. Achak, who later took the name Valentino, was a six-year old boy living in the village of Marial Bal with his parents. One day, he was in his home with his mother as she wove a basket, and he heard a loud rumbling sound outside. It was the beginning of the war. People ran out to see what was happening. There were planes flying over their village, and a large group of Arab militiamen on horses. They had guns and were shooting the villagers. They burned all the houses, killed whomever they saw, grabbed the women, and took their cattle. That was also the day that Valentino ran away from his village, from his family. He ran day and night, stopping only when he felt safe enough to rest, and then ran again, looking for a safe place called Ethiopia that he heard about from other boys. On the way, he encountered a large group of boys walking by, and he joined them, thinking it would be safer than traveling by himself. These Lost Boys walked through the desert, losing many to disease, thirst, and hunger and lions. On this Big Walk, the Arabs often attacked them. Valentino and the other boys lived in Ethiopia for some years, but had to run again because the Arabs invaded their refugee camp, killing more refugees. The only thing to do was to continue running, running. Their next place of refuge was Kenya. There, Valentino lived for ten years with other people in a hut they built by themselves, and was able to go to school, and apply for jobs.He applied for an immigrant visa to an unknown place, where he was told there would be no war, and peace and equality for everyone. In 1999, he immigrated to the United States to create his new life. A few years later heandthe author met and agreed to write this book, which we are now reading. The reason why I like about this book is the vocabulary. What is the What, which spend me a lot time to finish, it's a challenge book for me. During the reading, I had encountered enormous big words, this book helps me a lot to improved my vocabulary, Vocabulary, which is the big part of the reading, have a big vocabulary would be easy for the reader to reading a book, while for the students who learn English as a second language have a really hard time to overcomes this problem. I'm really interesting in this book, even it's a long story, but I have fun with it. This is a really good book for student for read, I'm looking forward to read another book, so I can improved my English vocabulary, reading a book, is a very easier way to learning things, and train self-cultivation. Let's keep working!

Lucie Duff Gordon's "Letters From Egypt (1862-1869)" is the historical account this is loosely based on.
