I would describe this book as operatic -- sweeping emotions, lots of deus ex machina at the end, sweeping themes, and fatalistic tragedy. All of which generally make for a good yarn. However, what I enjoyed the most about the book were the few quiet moments in it, such a descriptions of people socializing at the swap meet after the main character moves to the U.S. Sometimes I felt like it was a little over the top, but I would be lying if I said I didn't get weepy at some points reading it.
