I'd read a couple of other books by Jane Green a few years ago and didn't like them much, although I only vaguely remember them and couldn't articulate my complaints. This one is fairly recent so maybe it represents more skill as a writer or a more mature perspective -- whatever it is, I did enjoy this. The story follows a group of friends who were close during their A-level years but reunite when they're all 39-ish. I found the characters to be pretty believable, and was pleased at the realism in how they reacted to situations. Maybe because I'd set my expectations so low it was easy to impress me, but I think I enjoyed it because it didn't seem to be formulaic.
