i came to this book as a fan of the history boys and knew nothing else about bennett, except for some excerpts from his diaries. his writing is precise and full of wry humour; i particularly enjoyed (if that's the word) his account of his struggle with cancer - trying to keep it as fuss-free as possible.

To those in search of origins, their own, or Delillo's, this is undoubtedly an interesting read. As Delillo's first novel, and most obvious attempt at the great American novel, it falls prey to many "first novel mistakes." It is clever, sharp and keenly insightful, but it is disjointed, winding and flabby.

I've read this several times- sometimes I think it is the funniest, most clever book I've ever read and sometimes I think it is the most tragic, hopeless story on earth. Owen Meany stays with you.

An emotive depiction of how the genocide affected those who were meant to stop it. I would recommend this book to anyone.
