I was relieved to find it wasn't as gory as it sounded, and I learned so many fascinating things about Chicago and US history, it made the 1890s seem real. I couldn't put it down.
I'm reading this along in bits between other books. Since I'm entering menopause I thought it best to celebrate it!
Oh, those Russians.
What do I love even more than mermaids….mermen of course. Fin is just gorgeous, enchanting, loyal and would do anything for the people he loves. This story is told from two pov's. Fin the merman and Ash the human girl he is in love with. Its really interesting because a big part of Fin's story is told from his underwater home and Ash's pov is told from up above on land. Ash falls into the water and Fin saves her, he kisses her and by doing so he makes his promise to her. In Fin's world, all it takes is one kiss to another to then be promised with that person for life. You can't bare to be without them. You are bound together. Fin and Ash have a problem though, he is a merman and she is human. Fin can't stay out after dark, his legs turn into a scaly fishy merman tail, in an almost hulk like way, as he describes it. He needs water. He also has been told by the mer-folk king to promise himself to another mermaid. Fin must leave Ash and go into hiding with his family. He also needs to rescue his sister, who is missing, having been tricked into a promising by the not so nice merman, Azor. I wonder if Ash will become a mermaid or will Fin become human? It was a magical story and really cute. The love between them did happen really fast but Ive found with mermaid books, it usually does. I have found you can't really take mermaid books to seriously, they are always just a bit of fun. I love when Fin calls her, "my Ashlyn." He is a real sweetheart.
