This has been my favorite book since I was five years old. It is amazing and the characters are gritty and raw.
Piscine "Pi" Patel, the son of a zookeeper, is 16 years old when his family attempts to immigrate to Canada from India. They bring several of their zoo animals with them, as they've been sold to zoos in North America. The cargo ship they are aboard sinks and Pi is the only member of his family (and the entire ship) to survive. He finds himself stranded in a lifeboat in the vast Pacific Ocean with several of the zoo animals, including a tiger. Pi has to rely on his faith in God (he practices Christianity, Hinduism and Islam) and his wits to survive.
I haven't actually read this in the book version, but the stories on his website are hilarious.
This was a nice throwback to my years in Beantown. Kind of wish I'd read this book before I moved there, though; it explains a LOT.
