In reading Richard Price's eighth novel, Lush Life, I had a hard time believing it was New York's LES. I kept imagining the mission in San Francisco. The mission district was the grimy, gritty, dicey, area of San Francisco, but due to the dot come has become uber trendy with new restaurants and clubs that get lines out the doors every weekend. People flock there for the grit and the grime. There are projects, and locals that want to claim ownership. There is our hero, Detective Matty Clark, who is tragically flawed by drinking and smoking and having messed up kids, but caring about this investigation over any other. the best supporting would be a tie between his partner Yoli and the only true witness Eric Cash. Eric lets you down again and again, but somehow you want him to be okay. The beginning of this book was so slang filled and rough that I actually took a while to get into it. I was engrossed in a page turning frezy twoards the middle, and again it slowed down at the end. The book showed the dark side of the police, hidden agendas, lack of resources, pinning murders on innocent bystandards just to have it "solved" and so on. Detective Clark cares about the vics and wants to actually find the shooter. No one else in the department seems to care. Sadly I am sure this is how it is often in real life. I felt curious after this book was over as to what happens next.
