I'll admit that reading these 85 essays is a bit of a chore, but it's a worthwhile one in the end. "The Federalist" was written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, in an attempt to answer criticisms of the proposed constitution. The opponents to a federal government with enough power to keep the nation together and to perform its functions were there at the beginning, and are with us today. In their defense of the constitution, the authors provided future readers with a handy guide to original intent, which is invaluable in a climate of conflicting claims. Each essay deals with a particular subject, so it is possible to dip into the book and find specifics, if you're not interested in reading the whole thing. So it's a nice book to have around the house.
