i keep trying to feel more about this book--which is ironic since that is the fatal flaw of the main character--no feeling, attachment, emotion. i can't. i had no sympathy for him--pity perhaps, but not the sympathy that draws a reader to the main character. funny, today, this would be a character diagnosed with borderline personality disorder or sociopathy, and therefore he would be a more sympathetic character. i see what camus is getting at, but still didn't care.

I usually have a hard time finishing "beach reads" but I finished this one in record time - that in itself deserves 4 stars! I liked how the author created a normal, imperfect woman and showed her struggles with career, men, and life in general. Funny, quirky dialogue that'll sure to entertain and tickle your humor!

OK, I'm going to give you a little summary that will not give away too much of the book. This book tells about the Baudelairs' house being burned down and Count Olaf trying to steal the Baudelairs' fortune. This is the first of the thirteen books of the Series of Unfortunate Events. I hope you have fun reading it. And please tell me if you liked it or not.

The Katrina essay is the high point of this collection. It's an account of New Orleanian manners, eccentricity, and neighborhood life. The way the crazy locals, the old classmates, and the regular guys come together after the storm resembles a bizarre family reunion...And as the author would have you believe, that's the been the way of all New Orleans for a long time. The descriptions of one neighborhood's experience adds a layer to the Katrina story that didn't make the Fox News scrollbar-of-sordidness. Tied for second are the Iraqi Constitution and the hobo story, two fenceposts of rewritten history. Pyongyang is also pretty cool.
