Timothy Egan presents a gripping picture of a bleak but fascinating chapter in U.S. history. It could have been as dry as an Oklahoma duststorm, except that Egan tells the story through the eyes of people who lived through it. He did an extraordinary reporting job and translated it into clear, compelling prose. The result is immensely satisfying in spite of the harshness of the subject matter. And he writes it with great respect for his subjects.
