I gave the book a 4 star for the audience that Dashner intended for the book--children and young adults. For an adult I would only give it 3 stars because, I feel, that parts of the book could be much more developed and were not. Overall I really liked and can see how other children could really get into it. The story is fun (although a little slow moving at the first) and adventurous. The kids in the book face real world situations as well as out of this world experiences that helps them to form a group of friendship that will last. I highly recommend the book to those particularly ages 10-14 although I feel that many adults could have fun with the book as well--reading it to their kids. In this 1st book of The 13th Reality series readers meet 13 year old Atticus Higginbottom also known as Tick. Tick is a smart kid that unfortunately gets him bullied all too often. One day Tick receives a strange letter postmarked from Macadamia, Alaska. The letter says that Tick must make a choice to fight against evil or just give in and burn the letter. Tick makes his choice and suddenly finds himself confronted by strange people, new friends, dangerous creatures, and a whole different look at the world he lives in.
