One of those books who shows you that everything is connected. The main research revolves around the grail and also about serpents, and other reptiles, througout time, religion and science.
This was the first book of Murakami's that I read, and it's still one of my favorites. I thought his other book of short stories Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman was far less impressive, so if you're trying to choose between them pick this one. The stories are rich and strange, most of them containing his par for the course elements of the surreal and fantastic.
Cannot believe I still haven't finished this. LAMEZORZ. Ok, finally finished this thing. Two years later after many restarts and breaks, I finally managed to get through the whole thing. Bleh. So frustrating. Don't hate me peeps...but I didn't like it that much. I mean...sure, its better than most books. But was it as good as Satanic Verses? Or even Haroun and the Sea of Stories? Nope. It was not. Too much rambling and the whole un-reliable narrator is cute for a while...but it gets a little old and frustrating. I really don't think any part of the book is as good as the first bit about his grandfather. It just goes downhill from then on.
