Crime aficionados take heart. Half-brothers LAPD detective Harry Bosch and criminal defense lawyer Mickey Haller have return for another outing in Michael Connelly’s latest offering, THE REVERSAL. This time out, a series of events have placed both brothers on the same side in the re-trial and prosecution of a convicted child killer, Jason Jessup. The brothers are both fathers of daughters who are currently the same age as Jessup’s victim, so for them this trial touches them on a personal and well as a professional level. I will not go into a re-telling of this look at how politics and public opinion effect the legal system. Instead just let me state that this is a story with well-drawn forceful characterizations. Everyone from the two men themselves, to the recovering druggie sister of the victim and from Haller’s ex-wife Maggie to the slimy deal making D. A. are fully developed and engaging. Readers are also given an inside look at the inner workings of what passes for “the justice system” from the investigative techniques employed by Bosch to the legal maneuvering of Haller and his courtroom nemesis. This is probably as incisive and realistic a look as most of us will ever get at “people who venture naively into the justice system and leave the courtroom wondering what happened”. Guess we should all be prepared to expect the unexpected.

** spoiler alert ** meh. Not really worth reading. In an effort to make Sookie less of a slut, Charlaine Harris limits the sex in this book to Sookie and Quinn rubbing on each other in their clothes. Quinn screams, "Oh God! Oh God!" while ejaculating into his pants, and then he tells Sookie she's just about the best he ever had. Maybe that was supposed to be sarcastic... Sookie and Quinn are almost immediately kidnapped, so Quinn now has to run around in his nasty jeans. I was relieved when they had to walk through the swamp, because I was thinking he was probably pretty itchy by then. As for the plot-- pretty weak. Sookie's deceased cousin, in a fit of jealousy, has hidden the vampire queen's very important bracelet. Sookie must find it! Losing this gift from the king is apparently a grievous violation of the marriage contract. Vampire mayhem will ensue! Lives will be lost!
