I can't remember the last time a book enveloped me in its world so thoroughly and held me as a willing hostage until its threads and mysteries resolved. The tale was interesting, to be sure, weaving together a hundred years of history and a slightly magical reality that seduces even me, a fantasy-story hater. But it went beyond entertainment. Wind Up Bird Chronicle thew a monkey wrench in my positivist approach to life. I'm trained to examine and deduce, but keep an open mind and look for proof. But, as May Kasahara pointed out, for all we know, when you put potato gratin in the microwave, it might turn into macaroni until just before you open the microwave and then transform into gratin just when the bell rings. In the Wind Up Bird Chronicle, the mysteries don't get solved by logic, but by intuition and faith. And it's good to be reminded of the validity and usefulness of that approach.
Fantastic statistics on cognitive therapy and how it works. REALLY interesting read. Educational and FUN!
