"The Things They Carried" is a great novel of Vietnam, and an even better example of Truth in writing. The book walks the line between memoir and fiction - using situations and at times people, that O'Brien experienced or knew - but is doesn't matter if any of it actually happened the way it is written, because O'Brien hits on monumental and universal truths that can be applied to most people put in these situations. The small things that are detailed so vividly within the different stories, and the way the characters react to situations, creates such realism that anyone can see the truth in them. This may be fiction, but it feels so real that it really borders into memoir.
I don't understand why this book got such high ratings--it seemed like a very generic paranormal to me. Female lead was annoying. Had to skim through to finish.
