I'd give it 2.5.
I loved this book. Set in the 1100’s in a rich and complex tale of a Italian woman doctor, Adelia, who specializes in postmortem analysis to discover causes of death. King Henry II has a problem in Cambridge, where people think Jews are killing young children. He needs to solve the problem to get his revenues and get the King of Sicily to send Adelia and her investigative partner Simon. It is so multi layered, rich descriptions of the English country side, the status of women and Jews, the power of the church, plus great character development. Franklin does a great job of plotting the mystery, keeping the identity of the perp secret until the end. It gets a little turgid with the back story of the crusades, but it is a wonderful read, even though sex works.
Very good, I was excited for this to come out and it was worth the wait.
